What was Snickers thinking when it approved the homophobic and anti-gay ad that ran during Super Bowl XLI?

If the ad, for which there were four different and equally homophobic endings on the Snickers web site, which was taken off line on Tuesday, wasn’t enough to start teeth grinding - men who employ violence against each other and on themselves when they think they might be gay - there was the player commentary.

On the website’s “Extras” section Bears and Colts players were so blatantly and unapologetically homophobic, you wonder under what cold rock these players, their agents, the ad agency, the network, and the client, have been living. Snickers claims in an email to those of us who complained that, “Feedback from our target consumers has been positive.” They never apologized. No one has.

As bad as it is, the ad is tame compared with the player commentary. You saw Mushin Muhammad, the Bears’ wide receiver’s unabashed expression of disgust at two men kissing. Then Desmond Clark, the Bears’ tight end, said in a homophobic voice, “Whoa, Whoa. Oh No,” as he watches the ad. Then cut to Mushin showing more disgust, and now back to Desmond asking “Did they actually have to kiss like that?” to which an off camera voice answers, “15 takes.”

Bears quarterback Rex Grossman liked the pulled chest hair ending best, but others liked the threesome gay “Love Boat” finale, with Desmond capping his review with “Oh no, not two men doing this.” Rex then lays on the praise saying, “It’s up there with some of the best commercials I’ve ever seen.”

Colts’ Linebacker Cato June says, “I thought they were gonna stop. At some point, you know. Two mens breaths (sic) catch each other. That’s not right. I thought the ‘Love Boat’ ending was the most entertaining for the simple fact that, what are you looking at? What is that twinkle in your eye? Why are you that close to another man?”

Marvin Harrison, Colts wide receiver, like the others, looked nervous and sounded stupid, and Snickers, despite pulling the ad and the web site, boasts in it’s email to complainers that, “USA ranked it #9 of its top ten pick.”

But this sad drama of player multi-millionaires living the dream minus compassion, sensitivity and the slightest connection with gay issues, gets worse when Wall Street Journal reporter Suzanne Vranica declares in an online story that the big ad fumble was Flomax, the prostate drug, because it mentions a “decrease in semen” as a side effect.

“Call me a prude,” she quotes Rob Feakins, president and chief creative officer of the New York office of ad agency Publicis USA, referring to the Flomax ad, “but there are kids watching the game.”

If statistics are correct one-in-ten of those kids is gay and saw a very different Super Bowl than the other kids likely saw. But it didn’t come from Flomax’s decreased semen. It came from Snickers’ mismanaged testosterone.
